In almost all houses of Javanese descent in Johor, sambal goreng is a favourite dish served on a dinner table for their families and guests. It is a must-have-dish for Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Hari Raya Aidiladha and kenduri (thanksgiving) as the dish is also part of the Nasi Ambeng servings.

Cooked thoroughly into a huge hot wok are fresh ingredients including ginger, galangal, fresh red chillies, shallots, buah keras (candlenuts), garlic and lemongrass. Hence, one could only imagine the wonderful explosion of aroma of these spices wafting through the whole house!
